Step Up Case Studies

Project name: Step Up – Artist Development Programme

Participant: E

E was undergoing cancer treatment. Before starting the Step Up programme she did not feel confident about her creative abilities and future prospects.

At Arts for Health we created a supportive atmosphere through small group sizes, an experienced artist and friendly volunteer. We worked to raise E’s confidence through encouragement, positive reinforcement, and a final exhibition and celebration event.

It felt like it was a soft place to fall in the madness that was going on in my life, it was like a little haven, a port in the storm!”

E has exhibited work in an exhibition and continues to paint at home. She went on to volunteer in various roles at Arts for Health including helping people with dementia enjoy making art and acting as a tour guide for the hospital art collection.

E reported that she was feeling positive about her future possibilities and planned to combine her new creative skills with her existing training in guiding – possibly to become an art guide in a gallery.
