Right Over Milton Keynes,
1983,
acrylic on canvas, Clement McAleer
'Right Over Milton Keynes' was commissioned by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation, which was in charge of creating the new town.
To research his painting, Clement arranged for a balloon flight over the new town as it was being built - so the surrounding fields were incorporated into the painting along with the new buildings.
The piece was shown at Milton Keynes Exhibition Gallery (when it was based in the Central Library) in 1983.
Clement mainly paints landscapes. He is not usually interested in the particular landmarks of a place, but rather the shifting aspects of nature where cloud or water, land or sea transform themselves into one another. As in the work here, sometimes a visible grid is created and then submerged.
Clement McAleer was born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. He studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London.
