Equilibrium was created in the early 1990s at a time when Jon was concerned with the destruction of the natural environment by man. In this sculpture he is exploring ideas of separation. The figures are pulling apart as they spin, which, he says, symbolises that focusing on our own individuality has the potential to isolate us not only from each other but also from the rest of the living world.

Despite this some people see the sculpture as symbolising unity, joyfulness and a feeling of ‘rising up’. The couple seem to spiral up towards the sky, their muscles are strong and they are equally balanced against each other as man and woman.

Jon has always been interested in representing human and animal forms, and his work explores man’s interaction with the natural world. He is also interested in art outside the Western tradition, particularly African sculpture. 

He has two pieces at Milton Keynes Hospital – ‘Equilibrium’ and also ‘Monumental Family’ which you can see outside A&E.
