Yellow Series, Print, 1970, Julia Ball

Julia is inspired by the landscapes of the Fens near her home in Cambridge, which she first visited in 1969.  Though abstract, her paintings suggest landscapes filled with shifting light, with geometric shapes acting as windows to the Fenland countryside of softer forms and colours.

“My long standing concern is to use the colour I find in East Anglian landscape: in light, water, the seasons, the time of day and particularly in plants to express my response. My aim is to balance the visual with my sensation of a particular moment. The surface of the canvas, its proportion, is crucial to the form of each painting, as is the translucency of oil paint for the colour to express both my internal and external experience.”
