Detail: Mother and Child Camel, 2002, steel rod sculpture. Image courtesty of Wendy Grant Photography.

The original camel at the hospital was made by Chris Campbell from wood. It started life as a product of an artist in residency scheme in Derbyshire.

It started life as a product of an artist in residency scheme at Hallam School and Community Centre in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Before appearing in the courtyard at the hospital it made many appearances in exhibitions around the country and even featured on Blue Peter with other animals made by Campbell. It is rumoured to have its own Blue Peter badge!

By 2002 the wooden camel had had enough of the weather outside in the courtyard and was replaced with the fabricated metal Mother and Child Camel, which were also made by Chris.

This artwork features in our Twenty for Twenty Blog series, read more here.

Chris Campbell was born in 1956 in Blackpool. He studied Fine Arts at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic between 1977 and 1980.
