Stephen Gregory

Fast lines (1982) Stephen Gregory, acrylic on canvas.

Stephen Gregory was artist in residence in Milton Keynes from 1977-79. This was part of the vision of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation to put art at the heart of the new town, through placing artists in communities, securing community buildings as arts venues and commissioning public art as development took place.

Both of Gregory’s paintings at MK Hospital demonstrate his distinctive painting style. The paint has been applied in thin layers using brushes and spray application and masking tape has been used to produce sharply defined contours. The paint layer is very thin, leaving the canvas weave texture visible.

Stephen Gregory, Anderton Lift I (1978) oil on canva

Recent conservation work on Anderton Lift 1 (Above) revealed that the canvas is painted on both sides; the painting on the reverse appears to follow the same style and is believed to be an unfinished painting by Stephen Gregory which includes a section of a train.

Fast Lines shows MK Central Station and was painted the year that the station was opened.

Gregory also has paintings in collections at Open University, Moorland First School, MK City Discovery Centre and MK Council.

Anderton Lift II is at MK City Discovery Centre.

Stephen Gregory: After having trained at Newcastle University and Manchester Polytechnic, Stephen Gregory exhibited in group and solo shows in the North of England and London.

Following his residency in Milton Keynes, Gregory spent the next two years was a part –time lecturer at Sheffield Polytechnic. He then went on to work as community arts workers in Northampton, Cheshire and Nottingham.
