The original camel at the hospital was made by Chris Campbell from wood. It started life as a product of an artist in residency scheme in Derbyshire.
It started life as a product of an artist in residency scheme at Hallam School and Community Centre in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Before appearing in the courtyard at the hospital it made many appearances in exhibitions around the country and even featured on Blue Peter with other animals made by Campbell. It is rumoured to have its own Blue Peter badge!
By 2002 the wooden camel had had enough of the weather outside in the courtyard and was replaced with the fabricated metal Mother and Child Camel, which were also made by Chris.
