In the next instalment of our Twenty for Twenty
series, we ask our newest Trustee Dr Asha Chandola
to select an artwork from the Milton Keynes University Hospital
Art Collection.
Which work in The Collection have you chosen to talk about?
The oil on canvas painting ‘Man and Boy’ by Boyd and Evans.
When and how did you first see it?
I fist saw this painting very recently on the 6th February 2025. I am a newly appointed trustee for Arts of Health MK and I was also visiting the Hospital as a patient for some tests.
What first interested or attracted you to this artwork?
I loved the reflection of the sky on the water. The scene looked wintery, but the man and boy were lightly dressed.
What was their relationship? I thought grandfather and grandson.
The man seemed captivated by the view but the boy’s body language showed a reluctance to be there.
Had he been forced to take his grandfather?
I would love to know the narrative for this painting.
Do you remember how seeing this work made you feel?
Seeing the beautiful view warmed my soul. It reminded me of the beaches I saw in Iceland when my husband was still alive. It brought back happy memories. My son had also been with us, so maybe the painting also reminded me of father and son on the beach together.
In general, what kind of impact do you think seeing art at MKUH has on your experience of being on the hospital site?
It lifted my spirits as nature always does.
